Metro will reduce penalties for drivers using express
lanes.
The
Metro is considering making a permanent pilot program that began in 2019
permanent and letting drivers pay a nominal charge to use the express lanes on
the 110 and 10 Freeways without a transponder. Drivers who used the express
toll lanes had their tolls reduced from $25 to $4 as part of the pilot program.
The lanes were introduced in 2012 and 2013 to help alleviate traffic in Los
Angeles. The fees were assessed on top of the demand-based pricing for
utilizing the routes, which varies regularly depending on the traffic volume.
Metro officials said Thursday that the price needs to be doubled to $8 to cover
expenditures, so the board of directors may vote next month to make the program
permanent. It would make the Metro system more user-friendly by allowing people
who might not own a transponder to use the lanes for a reduced fee
occasionally, hoping that they would eventually become regular users. Read
